There is something quietly extraordinary about stepping into your own heated pool when the rest of Europe is wearing a winter coat. Villa Almada has two en suite bedrooms, a walled garden, an outdoor dining patio with a gas barbecue and its own private pool, and it sits in the grounds of Canto de Luz, our Boutique Maison on Rua do Almada. From October to January it is at its most distinctive: the garden is yours alone and Porto’s Christmas city is outside the gate. Our guide to Christmas in Porto covers the lights, markets and New Year in the city itself.
A private villa with a pool in a city you can walk from end to end is rare in Porto, and in winter the combination is what brings families and groups back year after year. You have your own front door, your own kitchen and your own garden, with the maison team and breakfast a few steps away. Our villas page has the full layout and photographs, and the Porto weather guide covers what December and January are really like.

Villa Almada is set within the walled grounds of Canto de Luz in Porto’s old town. The upper floor holds a 28 square metre open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen with floor to ceiling glass doors onto a private dining patio, and one of the two bedrooms. The second bedroom is on the lower floor. Beyond the patio a sun deck with loungers leads to the private pool and a small planted garden, all enclosed by high walls, so the whole space is yours without being overlooked.
The pool is 5 by 5 metres and uses salt electrolysis rather than chlorine. In winter you can have it heated to between 28 and 30°C for a daily fee that covers the power: we send you a link a few days before arrival so you can decide once you see the forecast, and we need 24 to 36 hours to bring the water up to temperature. On a bright December morning in Porto, a warm pool inside a sheltered walled garden is one of those things guests talk about for years.

Family Christmas at a Porto Villa with a Pool

A family Christmas in a private villa, in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, with a pool that actually gets used: this is what brings families back to Villa Almada in winter. Children swim in the morning while adults take breakfast on the dining patio. Teenagers discover that the Ribeira, the street art and the record shops and cafés of Cedofeita and the Baixa are genuinely their kind of place. Everyone comes back to the villa for dinner, which you can cook in the kitchen, grill on the barbecue on a dry evening, or have delivered from one of the neighbourhood’s restaurants.
Porto in December averages highs around 14°C and lows near 7°C, and the Christmas lights cover the city from the end of November to 6 January. We keep cots and high chairs for babies, and our team can help with family restaurant reservations, a day in the Douro Valley and a list of things that work for children in Porto in winter: the Aliados tree after dark, the ice rink at the Cordoaria market, the Funicular dos Guindais, Serralves park, and the beach and fish restaurants at Matosinhos. Our family stay page covers what we provide for younger children in more detail.
What Families Use Most at Villa Almada
- The private pool, heated to 28 to 30°C on request
- Cots and high chairs for babies and toddlers
- A fully equipped kitchen and washer dryer for longer stays
- Blackout blinds and shutters for afternoon naps
- The walled garden and dining patio for lunch outside on clear days
- Board games and a smart TV in the lounge for wet evenings
New Year’s Eve in Porto from a Private Villa

Villa Almada sleeps a small group in complete privacy, which makes it one of the best places in Porto to spend New Year’s Eve. The city’s official celebration is on Avenida dos Aliados, about five minutes on foot, with free concerts, a countdown and midnight fireworks. In 2025 the music started at 22:00 and carried on until a DJ set from 02:00. If you prefer the river, the Ribeira and the Gaia bank fill with people watching the fireworks over the Dom Luís I bridge, 15 to 20 minutes downhill. Either way you come back to your own space: no hotel lobby, no strangers in the corridor, no checkout pressure in the morning.
We can arrange restaurant reservations, which are essential for New Year’s Eve and worth making at least three weeks ahead, along with taxi bookings and champagne waiting in the villa. For groups who want to mark the night properly, we work with local private chefs who can cook a New Year’s Eve dinner in the villa kitchen: let us know when you book and we will make the introduction. Our group stay page covers larger parties who want the whole maison.

A Couples’ Winter Escape: A Porto Villa in December
In winter the villa makes a genuinely romantic proposition: a private pool, a walled garden with a barbecue if the mood takes you, and a city full of candlelit restaurants on the doorstep. December evenings in the Baixa and Cedofeita, with their independent wine bars and neighbourhood tascas, have an intimacy that is hard to find in July, and the Christmas lights make the walk home part of the evening. For couples who have done beach holidays and city centre hotels, a private villa in a European city at Christmas is something different.
We can arrange a port cellar tour in Vila Nova de Gaia, a day trip to the Douro Valley, where the terraces sit bare and misty in winter light, and reservations in the places where Porto actually eats. Our Douro Valley wine tour guide covers the routes. Breakfast from Canto de Luz is available to villa guests, and the maison team is yours for concierge, local knowledge and the kind of detail that makes a city break feel properly considered.
A Note from Susan
"Villa Almada is my favourite place in Porto on a clear winter morning. The garden walls hold the sun, the pool is warm if you have asked us to heat it, and you can hear the city without seeing it. Families book it for the pool and then tell me the best part was having dinner together at their own table after a day of walking."
— Susan, Founder of Espais Roca
Multigenerational Christmas and Three Kings at Villa Almada

Three generations under one roof, on Portuguese time: grandparents who want a gentler pace in one of Europe’s most lived-in historic cities, parents who want good food, good wine and days without a schedule, and children who simply want the pool. Villa Almada works for this in a way that almost no hotel room can, with two en suite bedrooms, a sofa bed in the lounge and a dining table big enough for everyone. Our multigenerational stay page covers larger families who need more rooms in the maison as well.
If you are planning around Epiphany, Dia de Reis on 6 January, build in the Bolo Rei. Every bakery in the city makes the Kings Cake through the festive season, a ring of sweet bread crowned with candied fruit and nuts, and sharing one in the villa garden across three generations is one of those mornings people remember. The villa is bookable up to our annual maintenance closure in the second week of January, and the last Christmas window runs from 5 to 9 January 2027.
January in Porto has its own rhythm: the same Cedofeita restaurants, the same port wine tascas and the same morning market at the Bolhão, with the markets restocked after the holidays and the low winter sun lighting up the river. Our Porto itinerary suggests how to spend two, three or four days, and it works just as well in January as in spring. Pair it with a morning at the Bolhão and an afternoon in the Gaia port lodges, and come back to the villa for dinner in your own kitchen.
October and November Villa Stays in Porto
The villa before Christmas is worth considering too. October in Porto still reaches highs of around 20°C, with long golden afternoons, the last of the Douro harvest nearby and the city’s restaurants cooking with the first autumn produce. Several quintas in the valley welcome visitors for tastings and cellar visits after the harvest, and the train along the river is at its most beautiful when the vines turn red and gold.
November brings roasted chestnuts on the street corners, São Martinho on 11 November with the season’s new wine, and the Christmas lights at the end of the month. On a clear autumn day the walled garden catches the afternoon sun, and a heated pool at the end of a day in the city is as good in November as it is in December. If you want the villa and the lights without the Christmas week itself, the last days of November and early December give you both.
Christmas at Villa Almada: Dates and Booking
Villa Almada is open through Christmas and New Year 2026 to 2027. Our annual maintenance closes the villa from the second week of January 2027, and the last bookable Christmas and New Year window before the closure is 5 to 9 January 2027, which covers the Three Kings weekend. Christmas and New Year dates are the first to go, so book early and tell us when you book if you would like the pool heated, a private chef for New Year’s Eve, or cots and high chairs set up before you arrive.
"We couldn’t have been happier with our choice. The staff is great and our room was comfortable, spacious and clean. The hotel is close to everything. We walked most places, but you have 2 metro stops that just a few minutes from the front door. Another great thing was that they had an amazing breakfast for us each morning."
