  • In 2025 the lights came on across about 94 streets and squares on 29 November, with a 30-metre tree in front of City Hall.
  • December in Porto averages 6.9°C to 14.4°C and is the wettest month of the year.
  • The main Christmas markets are at Jardim da Cordoaria, Praça da Batalha, the Alfândega and WOW in Vila Nova de Gaia.
  • Avenida dos Aliados, about five minutes on foot from Canto de Luz, hosts the free New Year’s Eve concert and midnight fireworks.
  • Canto de Luz is open through Christmas and New Year, with last stays before the January maintenance closure on 5 to 9 January 2027.

Christmas in Porto starts when the lights go on at the end of November and runs until Dia de Reis on 6 January. For about five weeks the old town is strung with lights, the markets open in Batalha and Cordoaria, the bakeries fill with Bolo Rei, and Avenida dos Aliados becomes the city’s living room, with a 30-metre tree in front of City Hall. Canto de Luz, our Boutique Maison on Rua do Almada, stays open through Christmas and New Year, and Aliados is about five minutes on foot from our front door. Our Porto weather by month guide has the full December picture if you are planning around the rain.

December in Porto is a month of coats and port wine, long lunches and early evenings under the lights. Daytime highs sit around 14°C, warm enough to eat outside at lunch on a clear day, and the tascas and wine bars of the Baixa are doing what they do best: feeding regulars and the visitors who knew to come in winter. For the season as a whole, Porto in winter covers November to February, and our winter stay page covers the suites and the heated pool.

The city switches its Christmas lights on in a single evening at the end of November. In 2025 that was 29 November, when around 94 streets and squares lit up at once with 2.4 million LED lights, followed by a video-mapping show and a concert by Mariza with the Porto Youth Orchestra on the Aliados stage. The centrepiece is the 30-metre tree on Praça General Humberto Delgado, in front of City Hall at the top of Avenida dos Aliados. The 2026 date is usually announced in November, so check the city programme before you plan an arrival around it.

The lights stay on until 6 January. In 2025 they came on at 17:30 every evening and went off at 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The walk that shows them best is a simple loop from our door: up to Aliados and the tree, across to Rua de Santa Catarina, past the Bolhão and back through Praça da Batalha. It takes about an hour at an easy pace, and the Aliados stage hosts free concerts through December, so there is often music playing when you arrive.

Christmas Lights Walk from Canto de Luz

  • Rua de Santa Catarina, the main shopping street, about 15 minutes
  • Mercado do Bolhão and Rua Formosa, about 10 minutes
  • Praça da Batalha and its Christmas market, about 15 minutes
  • Praça da Liberdade and São Bento station on the way back, about 10 minutes

Porto Christmas Markets: Cordoaria, Batalha, Alfândega and Gaia

Porto does not have one big Christmas market in the way Vienna or Strasbourg do. It has four, each with a different character, and all of them are an easy walk or a short ride from Canto de Luz. The largest is in Jardim da Cordoaria beside the Clérigos Tower, with local crafts, food and drink, a small ice rink and a carousel for children. The Praça da Batalha market sets its wooden stalls in front of the blue-tiled Igreja de Santo Ildefonso and leans towards crafts and traditional Portuguese Christmas sweets.

Down by the river, the Porto Christmas Village at the Alfândega is covered, which makes it the one to choose on a wet afternoon, and it adds an ice rink and games for children. Across the Dom Luís I bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia, WOW, the World of Wine district, runs its own Christmas programme with markets, workshops and a lit tree above the port lodges. Dates are from the 2025 season, and the organisers usually confirm the new ones in November.

The Bolhão market itself is worth a December visit even though it is not a Christmas market. The stalls fill with chestnuts, dried fruit, bacalhau and everything that goes into a Portuguese Christmas table, and the fountain in the middle gets its own nativity scene. Our Mercado do Bolhão guide covers opening hours and the stalls to look for, and it is ten minutes from Canto de Luz.

Christmas in Portugal: Consoada and Portuguese Christmas Traditions

The heart of Christmas in Portugal is Consoada, the family supper on the night of 24 December. The traditional dish is bacalhau com todos, salt cod served with boiled potatoes, cabbage and eggs and dressed generously with olive oil and garlic. After supper many families go to the Missa do Galo, the Midnight Mass. In some parts of the country an extra place is still set at the table for the alminhas, the souls of relatives who have died, which gives the evening a weight that visitors notice even when they only see it from a restaurant table.

Christmas Day is a family day, and many restaurants close on the evening of the 24th and on the 25th, so book the meals you care about before you arrive. The sweets are the part everyone remembers: rabanadas, slices of bread soaked in sweetened milk, fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar, filhoses, and the Bolo Rei, which appears in every bakery from late November. Canto Cooking, the cooking school on site at Canto de Luz, runs Portuguese Christmas classes through December and into early January, including rabanadas and Bolo Rei, and you can book them at cantocooking.com.

Portuguese Christmas Food to Try in Porto

  • Bacalhau com todos: salt cod with potatoes, cabbage and eggs, the Christmas Eve supper
  • Rabanadas: fried bread soaked in milk and rolled in cinnamon sugar
  • Filhoses: fried dough, dusted with sugar and cinnamon
  • Bolo Rei: the ring cake topped with candied fruit and nuts
  • Bolo Rainha: the same cake made with nuts and dried fruit instead of candied fruit

Christmas in Porto for Couples

For couples who have already done the obvious European Christmas cities, Prague, Vienna, Edinburgh, Porto in December is the one they tend to wish they had found sooner. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is small enough to walk end to end, the port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia are a bridge away, and the evenings are for candlelit restaurants and a glass of tawny under the lights. Guests tell us that Canto de Luz in December feels like a different place from the summer version, and we think that is right: the suites are made for winter, with warm lighting, deep beds and the heated pool in the garden.

Arrive on the 23rd or 24th if you want to feel Consoada happening around you, and book your restaurant for the 24th well in advance, because the good tables for two fill early. We can help with restaurant recommendations, port cellar bookings in Gaia and a private driver for a day in the Douro Valley, which in December is all bare vines, mist on the river and terraces in low winter light. Our Douro Valley wine tour guide covers the routes, and our romantic stay page covers the suites couples book most.

Family Christmas Stays in Porto

Porto surprises families at Christmas. The blue-tiled azulejo façades of São Bento station and the city’s churches hold children’s attention in a way a conventional market often does not, the Funicular dos Guindais from the Ribeira up to the old walls feels like a ride, and the lights and the Aliados tree are a genuine event for children who have not seen them before. The Cordoaria market adds an ice rink and a carousel, and the Alfândega Christmas village gives you a covered option for a wet afternoon.

We welcome families in our larger suites, with sofa beds and cots available, and the heated outdoor pool is open every day of the year from 09:30 to 19:30, which children take as a personal gift in December. Outside the city, Serralves park and museum is about 20 minutes away by taxi or bus for a morning outdoors, the Atlantic beach at Matosinhos is about half an hour on the metro and makes a very good reset, and Braga is about an hour north by train for a day in another old city. Our family stay page covers the suites and what we provide for younger children.

New Year’s Eve in Porto: Aliados Fireworks and the Riverside

New Year’s Eve in Porto centres on Avenida dos Aliados, which hosts the city’s official celebration with free concerts, a countdown and fireworks at midnight. In 2025 the music started at 22:00, the fireworks at midnight were paired with a multimedia show, and the concerts carried on well after midnight with a DJ set from 02:00. On New Year’s Day the Aliados stage hosts a free afternoon concert. Aliados is about five minutes on foot from Canto de Luz, which means you can have dinner, walk up for the countdown and be back at the maison without a taxi queue in sight.

If you would rather see the fireworks over the water, a lot of Porto heads down to the Ribeira and across to the Gaia side, where the display is framed by the Dom Luís I bridge. The walk down is 15 to 20 minutes, and back up is slower. For New Year’s Eve dinner, book at least three weeks ahead, since the better restaurants fill from early December, and tell us your dates when you book so we can help. Groups who want a private space to come back to can take Villa Almada at Christmas and New Year, our two-bedroom villa with its own pool in the grounds of Canto de Luz.

A Note from Susan

"December is my favourite month in Porto. I walk up to Aliados most evenings while the lights are on, and the first thing I tell guests is to book dinner for the 24th before they book anything else. Consoada is a family night here, and the restaurants that do open fill up weeks ahead. Then leave room for Bolo Rei, because you will be offered it everywhere."

Three Kings Weekend in Porto and the Bolo Rei

In Portugal the Christmas season ends on Dia de Reis, 6 January, and the cake that marks it is the Bolo Rei. It is a ring of sweet bread flavoured with citrus zest and a splash of port, crowned with candied and dried fruit, nuts and sugar, and every bakery in Porto makes it from late November through January. Traditionally a dried fava bean and a small charm were baked inside: find the charm and you were lucky for the year, find the bean and you bought next year’s cake. The charms were dropped for safety reasons and many bakeries leave out the bean too, but people still check their slice.

The weekend of 5 to 7 January is the last festive window of the season. The lights stay on until the 6th, the WOW market in Gaia ran until 6 January in 2025, and the port cellars are unhurried enough to taste properly. Canto de Luz is open, and the last stays before our annual maintenance closure run from 5 to 9 January 2027. Pair the weekend with a Bolo Rei class at Canto Cooking, which runs through the first week of January, and you go home knowing how to make the cake rather than just how to eat it.

Porto Weather in December, November and January

Porto’s winter is mild but wet, and December is the wettest month of the year. Temperatures rarely drop near freezing in the city and daytime highs sit in the low to mid teens, so the right approach is layers and a proper waterproof rather than a heavy coat. The long-term averages from our Porto weather guide, show why November and early December can be the sweet spot for a city break with the lights on.

MonthLowHighRainSunshine hours

December6.9°C14.4°C181mm124
January5.2°C13.8°C147mm124

What to Pack for Christmas in Porto

  • A waterproof jacket with a hood, since Porto rain comes with wind and umbrellas turn inside out
  • Shoes with good grip, because the old town is steep and the granite cobbles are slippery when wet
  • Layers for warm lunches and cold evenings
  • A swimsuit for the heated pool at Canto de Luz
  • A small bag for Bolo Rei and port bought on the way home

October and November Stays in Porto

The weeks before Christmas have their own character. In October the Douro Valley finishes its harvest, the vines turn red and gold on the terraces, and the afternoon light on the Ribeira façades is the light every photographer in Porto talks about. Daytime highs still reach around 20°C, and the city’s restaurants are cooking with the first of the autumn produce. It is a very good month to take the train up the Douro and see the valley in colour.

November brings the first roasted chestnuts to the street vendors, and on 11 November Portugal celebrates São Martinho with chestnuts and the season’s new wine. The wine bars move to heavier reds, the Bolhão fills with seasonal produce, and at the end of the month the Christmas lights go on. If you want the lights without the Christmas week itself, the last days of November and the first two weeks of December give you both, and Canto de Luz has its full range of suites open for them.

Christmas at Canto de Luz: Open Dates and Your Stay

Canto de Luz is open through Christmas and New Year 2026 to 2027. Our annual maintenance closes the maison from the second week of January 2027, with a second closure later in the month that runs into the first week of February. The last bookable window before the January closure is 5 to 9 January 2027, which covers the Three Kings weekend. Breakfast is homemade and changes daily, the heated outdoor saltwater pool is open every day from 09:30 to 19:30, and our team is on WhatsApp before and during your stay for restaurant bookings, port cellar tours and anything else you need.

Villa Almada, our two-bedroom villa with its own private pool and walled garden in the grounds of Canto de Luz, is also open over Christmas and New Year for families and small groups who want their own space. Whether you book a suite or the villa, the Aliados tree is five minutes away and the whole of the old town is on foot. Our stays page shows every suite type side by side.

"Communication via WhatsApp allowed me to ask questions about the hotel before our stay and be able to discuss any concerns during our stay… When we arrived we were treated to an upgrade to a Duplex Garden Retreat Villa and it was so beautiful and spacious for our 5 night stay. The website pictures do not lie!… We were cheerfully greeted every morning by the warm and hospitable staff ready to take our breakfast order."
