At A Glance
New Year's Eve in Porto is a free street party on Avenida dos Aliados, with live concerts from 22:00 and fireworks launched from City Hall at midnight.
- Last year the line-up ran from 22:00 to well after 02:00, and entry to Aliados was free.
- The fireworks are fired from the City Hall building at the top of Aliados, not over the river.
- The metro ran all night until 06:00, but Aliados station closed from 19:00, so use Trindade or São Bento.
- 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday and 1 January 2027 on a Friday, a public holiday.
- Canto de Luz is on Rua do Almada, one of the official walking routes into the party, about 5 minutes from Aliados.
Every December the same question arrives on my WhatsApp: where do we go for midnight in Porto? The answer is the simplest one in the city. Porto welcomes the new year on Avenida dos Aliados, the grand avenue that runs down from City Hall, with a free concert, a countdown and fireworks over the crowd. If you are spending the whole festive season with us, my guide to Christmas in Porto covers the lights, the markets and Three Kings, and this page is all about the night itself.
Canto de Luz sits on Rua do Almada, which the police have named as one of the walking routes into the Aliados party for the last two New Year's Eves. You can finish dinner, put on another layer and walk down to the stage in about five minutes, then walk home after the fireworks without a taxi queue. Porto in winter is mild and often wet, so it is worth reading how the Porto winter season feels before you pack.
The city announces each year's line-up, transport plan and road closures at a press conference in the last days of December. Everything in this article comes from the 2025/26 celebration and the plans published for it, so you know exactly what to expect, and I update the details as soon as the city confirms New Year's Eve 2026.

Passagem de Ano in Porto 2026: The New Year's Eve Timetable

New Year's Eve in Porto follows a clear rhythm, and knowing it makes the evening far easier. Roads around Aliados close in the early evening, the special night metro service starts at 20:00, the first concert begins at 22:00 and the whole avenue counts down together to the fireworks at midnight. After that the party carries on with a second headline act and a DJ set into the small hours.
The timetable that follows is last year's, as published by the city and the transport operators for 31 December 2025. The pattern has been very similar for several years, so it is a reliable guide for planning dinner and travel, while the 2026 column fills in once the city makes its announcement in late December.
| Time | What happened on New Year's Eve 2025/26 | 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| 19:00 | Avenida dos Aliados closed to traffic and Aliados metro station closed | Confirmed by the city in December |
| 20:00 | Special all-night metro service began | Confirmed in December |
| 21:30 | Pedestrian restrictions around City Hall for the fireworks | Confirmed in December |
| 22:00 | First concert on the Aliados stage (Clã) | Line-up announced in December |
| 00:00 | Fireworks from City Hall with the multimedia show "Fluxo" | Midnight countdown |
| 00:30 | Second concert (Nininho Vaz Maia) | Line-up announced in December |
| 02:00 | DJ set to close the night (Beatbombers) | Line-up announced in December |
| 05:00 to 06:00 | Aliados station reopened, then the metro returned to its holiday timetable | Confirmed in December |
| 1 January, 16:00 | Free New Year concert on Aliados | To be confirmed |
Because 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, many visitors will arrive on the Tuesday or Wednesday and stay through the long weekend that follows New Year's Day. That makes it a good year for a four night stay, and it is exactly the kind of stay my team plans around, with restaurant suggestions and timings for the evening shared on WhatsApp before you arrive.
Porto New Year's Eve Concert and Street Party on Aliados
The heart of New Year's Eve in Porto is the stage built in front of City Hall at the top of Avenida dos Aliados. The avenue is wide, gently sloped and lined with granite buildings, so even a crowd of tens of thousands can see the stage and the City Hall facade. The city expected more than 100,000 people at the 2024/25 edition, which gives you a sense of the scale on a dry year.
Last year the music opened at 22:00 with Clã, one of Portugal's best loved pop rock bands. At midnight came the fireworks with a multimedia and pyromusical show called "Fluxo", followed by fado singer Nininho Vaz Maia at 00:30 and a DJ set from Beatbombers at 02:00. The year before featured Rui Veloso and Nuno Ribeiro, so the city tends to mix a well-known Portuguese name with a younger act.
Entry to the Aliados party is free, and there are no tickets or wristbands. You enter on foot through one of the access points around the avenue, where police carry out security checks, and glass bottles and fireworks are not allowed in. Bring drinks in plastic or buy them from the bars and kiosks around the square, and keep your bag small so you move through the checks quickly.
My advice is to arrive between 22:00 and 23:00 rather than at the last minute. The best spots, roughly level with the middle of the avenue where you can see both the stage and City Hall, fill in the hour before midnight. If you prefer more space, stand nearer Praça da Liberdade at the bottom of the avenue, where the crowd thins and the walk back up Rua do Almada is straightforward.
Porto New Year's Eve Fireworks: Where They Are Launched and How to See Them

Where Are the New Year's Eve Fireworks in Porto?
The New Year's Eve fireworks in Porto are launched from the City Hall building at the top of Avenida dos Aliados, timed with the music and lighting of the midnight show. That is why the avenue is the place to be: you are standing directly in front of the launch point, with the facade lit up and the countdown on the big screens around you.
Many visitors arrive expecting fireworks over the Douro, because that is what they have seen in photographs. Those are from São João, the city's midsummer festival on the night of 23 June, when fireworks are fired over the river. On New Year's Eve the main show belongs to Aliados, and I would not send you down to the riverside expecting to see it.
There is one other set of fireworks worth knowing about. World of Wine (WOW), the cultural quarter above the port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, ran its own fireworks in its central square at midnight last year for guests of its New Year's Eve dinners and party. It is a ticketed, seated alternative to the street party, and the riverside setting is lovely if you would rather spend the evening on the Gaia side.
Best Places to Watch the New Year Fireworks in Porto
Each option suits a different kind of evening, from the free party in the centre to a ticketed dinner or cruise. Walking times are from our front door on Rua do Almada.
| Where | What you see | Cost | From Canto de Luz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avenida dos Aliados | The main show and concerts, right in front of City Hall | Free | About 5 minutes on foot |
| Praça da Liberdade end | The same show from further back, with more space | Free | About 8 minutes on foot |
| WOW, Vila Nova de Gaia | WOW's own midnight fireworks with dinner or a party | Ticketed | About 30 minutes on foot |
| Douro river cruise | A New Year party on the river under the bridges | Ticketed | About 25 minutes to the Gaia quay |
| Jardim do Morro and Serra do Pilar | City lights and river views, not the main show | Free | About 25 minutes on foot |
For most of my guests the choice is easy: dinner close to the Maison, then the five minute walk down to Aliados. The viewpoints in Gaia are beautiful at any hour, and the Jardim do Morro viewpoint is my favourite place for the last sunset of the year, but go there for the view over the Ribeira rather than for the midnight fireworks.
Metro Porto on New Year's Eve (Passagem de Ano): Night Service, Buses and Road Closures

Public transport is the easiest way to reach Aliados on New Year's Eve, and the city asks everyone to leave the car behind. Last year Metro do Porto ran a non-stop service through the night until 06:00, and the yellow Line D, which links São Bento, Aliados, Trindade and the Gaia side of the river, ran every six minutes until 03:00. Most lines ran every 10 to 30 minutes through the night.
Two details catch people out. Aliados station itself closed from 19:00 to 05:00 for safety, so you need to get off at Trindade or São Bento and walk the last few minutes. And the violet Line E to the airport stopped at around 01:00 as usual, so do not plan a late flight connection on New Year's night. The Porto metro map shows how Trindade and São Bento sit either side of the avenue.
New Year's Eve Transport Checklist
- Last year the metro ran all night until 06:00, with Line D every six minutes until 03:00.
- Aliados station closed from 19:00 to 05:00, so use Trindade or São Bento.
- The airport line stopped at about 01:00, as on a normal night.
- Eleven STCP bus lines were reinforced from 21:30 to 02:30, with night buses until 05:30.
- CP added 19,500 extra seats on urban trains from 20:00 on 31 December to 08:00 on 1 January.
- Enter Aliados on foot through the access points, with bag checks and no glass allowed.
- Check the operators' notices on 30 December, since a strike stopped the metro on New Year's Eve 2024.
Roads close early. Last year the avenue and the streets around it closed to traffic from 19:00 on 31 December until 07:00 on New Year's Day, with the northern edge of the closed area at Rua Gonçalo Cristóvão and Rua do Almada. If you are arriving by taxi on the 31st, aim to reach us before 19:00, and we will meet you at the door with the evening planned.
Once you are here, you do not need transport at all. Rua do Almada and Rua do Bonjardim were the walking routes in from the north, so the route from our door to the party is the one the police signpost. After midnight, when the metro platforms are at their busiest, you simply walk back up the hill.
New Year's Eve Dinner in Porto: Jantar de Passagem de Ano
Dinner is the part of New Year's Eve in Porto that needs booking furthest ahead. Most good restaurants switch to a fixed set menu for the night, often with a glass of sparkling wine at midnight and the twelve raisins on the table, and they take reservations from early December. On New Year's Eve 2025 the published set dinners ranged from about €85 to €180 per person.
As examples from last year, the Vela restaurant at the Yotel served a set dinner at €85 per person from 20:00 to 01:00, and the Cénica Porto Hotel held a gala dinner at €180 per person including drinks. In Gaia, the restaurants at WOW offered New Year menus with access to the Lodge 6 party afterwards. Prices for 2026 appear in late November and early December, and the best tables go quickly.
My suggestion is to choose somewhere within ten minutes of Aliados and book a sitting that finishes by 23:00, so you can walk to the countdown without rushing. Tell us your plans when you book your stay and we will share the restaurants our team recommends near the Maison, the same places we send guests to all year.
If you would rather keep the evening intimate, start at home. Our wine machine pours Douro wines by the tasting glass or the full glass with a small plates menu, and our private chef can prepare a special dinner at the Maison when booked in advance. Ask us when you reserve, as availability on 31 December is limited.
Stay in Porto's Old Town for New Year
Canto de Luz is a restored Boutique Maison on Rua do Almada, five minutes from the Aliados countdown, with a heated outdoor saltwater pool open all year and a homemade breakfast that changes every day. From €99 a night.

Porto New Year Boat Party and Other Ticketed Parties

If you want a party with a ticket rather than the open street, Porto has plenty of choice. The most memorable is a New Year boat party on the Douro: last year Living Tours ran a three hour cruise from 22:30 to 01:30, leaving from its quay on Avenida de Ramos Pinto in Gaia, with a DJ, an open bar and sparkling wine and raisins at midnight under the bridges. It was limited to 75 guests and to ages 10 and over.
On land, World of Wine in Gaia combined its restaurants with a party at Lodge 6 that ran until 04:00, free for diners, plus its own fireworks at midnight. In Porto, the Porto Réveillon party filled several rooms of the old customs house, the Alfândega, with pre-sale tickets at about €20 to €40, and clubs such as Hard Club and Maus Hábitos sold New Year tickets from roughly €25 and €13. Prices change every year, so treat these as a guide.
River cruises run all year, and if New Year's Eve on the water appeals, it is worth seeing the regular Douro river cruises in Porto first so you know the route under the six bridges. Book New Year sailings as early as you can, because the capacity is small and they sell out well before Christmas.
Whichever party you choose, plan your route home before you leave. From the Gaia quays you can walk back across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge to the Ribeira and up through the old town, or take a taxi, keeping in mind that taxis are scarce in the first hour after midnight.
Portuguese New Year Traditions to Try at Midnight
The Portuguese bring the new year in with a handful of rituals, and joining in is half the fun on Aliados. The best known is the twelve raisins, or passas: as the clock strikes midnight you eat one raisin for each chime, one for each month ahead, and make a silent wish with every one. Many restaurants put a small bowl on each table, and you will see people in the crowd with paper cups of raisins ready.
Midnight Rituals in Portugal
- Twelve raisins at the twelve chimes, with a wish for each month.
- Stand on a chair and step into the new year on your right foot.
- Hold money in your hand, or keep a note in your right shoe and spend it first in the new year.
- New underwear in a lucky colour: blue for health, yellow for money, red for love, white for peace.
- Bang pots and pans at midnight, then toast with sparkling wine and keep the cork for luck.
These customs are taken lightly but kept faithfully, and I have watched guests from every corner of the world climb onto a chair at midnight. If you are celebrating somewhere quieter than Aliados, a dinner table and a bowl of raisins are all you need to do it properly.
Food plays its part over the whole season too. Christmas brings bacalhau, rabanadas and bolo rei to every table, and Canto Cooking, our culinary school here at the Maison, runs market tours and cooking classes where you cook Portuguese classics yourself. A class on the 30th or the 2nd is a lovely way to bookend a New Year stay, and you can see the dates on the Canto Cooking website.
New Year's Day in Porto: What Is Open and What to Do

New Year's Day is a public holiday in Portugal, and Porto wakes up slowly. The metro and STCP buses run their Sunday and holiday timetables, many shops stay closed, and the Mercado do Bolhão is normally shut on public holidays. Museums and monuments often open shorter hours or close, so check the day before if one is high on your list.
The city keeps one more gift for the afternoon. On 1 January 2026 the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa gave a free New Year concert on Avenida dos Aliados at 16:00, a tradition the city has repeated in recent years. It is a relaxed, family-friendly event and a gentle way to see the avenue again in daylight after the night before.
For the brave, there is the first swim of the year. Each 1 January, groups of locals run into the Atlantic at Matosinhos, reached on metro Line A, as an informal tradition rather than an organised event. The water is cold all winter, so a hot shower and a long lunch afterwards are part of the ritual.
Our breakfast is served as usual on New Year's Day, so you can start slowly at the Maison before you head out. If you need an early start on any day of your stay, the team will pack a breakfast to take with you.
Porto Weather in December and at New Year: What to Wear
Porto at New Year is mild by northern European standards and damp by any standard. December averages a high of 14.7°C and a low of 7.6°C, with about 153mm of rain spread over roughly 12 wet days, according to the national weather service's 1991 to 2020 averages. Midnight on Aliados usually sits somewhere around 7°C to 10°C.
Dress in layers you can stand in for two hours: a warm coat, a scarf, comfortable shoes for granite pavements that turn slippery in the rain, and a compact umbrella or a hooded waterproof. Umbrellas are fine on the avenue, but a hood is kinder to the people standing behind you during the fireworks.
The month-by-month figures are in my guide to the best time to visit Porto. And after a cold night outside, our heated outdoor saltwater pool is open all year from 09:30 to 19:30, which is a wonderful way to spend New Year's afternoon.
Porto in December: A Three Day New Year Itinerary from Canto de Luz

This is the plan I give guests arriving for New Year, built around walking distance from the Maison and the moments the city is at its best. It assumes you arrive on 30 December, a Wednesday this year, and stay through New Year's Day.
30 December: start with the Mercado do Bolhão in the morning, ten minutes from our door, for cheese, dried fruit and Christmas sweets, then walk down Rua de Santa Catarina past the Majestic Café. After lunch, climb the Clérigos Tower and wander down to the Ribeira. Cross the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge to Jardim do Morro for sunset, then spend the evening in a port lodge in Gaia before walking home.
31 December: do any shopping in the morning, since some shops may close early on New Year's Eve, then ride the historic tram 1 along the river to Foz for an Atlantic walk. Come back for a rest and a swim in the heated pool in the afternoon. Book dinner near Aliados for 20:00, walk down Rua do Almada around 22:00 for the first concert, see the fireworks at midnight and walk home when you are ready.
1 January: take a slow breakfast at the Maison, try the first swim of the year at Matosinhos if you dare, and come back to Aliados for the free New Year concert at 16:00. Finish the first day of the year with sunset in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal, then a quiet dinner close to home. The full list of what is on through the winter is in my Porto events calendar.
Why Spend New Year's Eve in Porto at Canto de Luz
Porto is one of the easiest cities in Europe to welcome the new year. The main party on Aliados is free, the old town is compact enough to walk everywhere, December is mild by northern European standards, and the Christmas lights stay on until Three Kings on 6 January, so the city still feels festive long after midnight.
Where you stay decides how the night feels. Stay close to Aliados and you walk to the countdown and home again; stay further out and you depend on the metro and on finding a taxi at one in the morning. Canto de Luz is a ruin we restored into a Boutique Maison on Rua do Almada, opened with French hospitality, and we are open right through Christmas and New Year.
We plan the evening with you before you arrive: restaurant suggestions near the avenue, the best time to walk down, and what the transport plan looks like this year. On the day itself, our team is on hand for everything else.
Passagem de Ano in Porto, Five Minutes from Our Door
Rua do Almada is one of the official walking routes into the Aliados party, so the route from our front door to the stage is the one the police signpost on the night. You can leave after dessert at 23:30 and still be in place for the countdown.
Walking Times from Canto de Luz
- Avenida dos Aliados and the New Year's Eve stage: about 5 minutes
- São Bento station: about 10 minutes
- Clérigos Tower: about 10 minutes
- Dom Luís I bridge: about 12 minutes
- Ribeira riverside: about 15 minutes
A Boutique Hotel in Porto's Old Town for New Year
Our suites are designed for a slow morning after a late night: air conditioning, a Samsung Art TV with Netflix and Disney, an Echo, a Nespresso machine and Rituals amenities. The City View suites open onto balconies over the rooftops of the old town.
Travelling as a group or a family? The Urban Retreat suites connect, Villa Almada has two bedrooms and its own private pool, and the two Duplex Garden Villas give you a private garden in the middle of the city. Check New Year availability.
A Heated Pool and Breakfast on New Year's Day
New Year's Day starts with our homemade breakfast, which changes every day and is made with ingredients from the Mercado do Bolhão. It is served in the Orangerie and on the garden terrace, and it is the best cure we know for a late night on Aliados.
Afterwards, our heated outdoor saltwater pool is open all year from 09:30 to 19:30. A swim in warm water under a winter sky, before the free New Year concert at 16:00, is a lovely way to begin the year.
Wine, Port and a Private Chef at the Maison
If you would rather begin the evening at home, our wine machine pours Douro wines by the tasting glass or the full glass, with a small plates menu to go with them. Canto Cooking also runs wine and port tastings with tapas every day.
For a special New Year's Eve dinner, our private chef can cook for you at the Maison when booked in advance. Ask us when you reserve, as 31 December books up first.
A Note from Susan
“My favourite part of New Year here is the walk. You leave the Maison with a coat on and a glass of something in you, follow the crowd down Rua do Almada, and five minutes later the whole avenue is counting down together. When it is over you walk home up the same street while everyone else queues for the metro. Book dinner early, bring your raisins, and leave the rest to us.”
“Awesome lodging in the heart of Porto. The service is 6 stars if possible. While all the staff were outstanding, Susan and Hannah were incredibly kind and helpful during our stay. I would not stay anywhere else when returning to Porto.”
DM B (Dave), stayed as a couple
