CANTO COOKING × THE MAISON

Porto Cooking School Hotel Stay, at Canto de Luz

My Porto cooking school hotel stay pairs one or two nights at Canto de Luz, my beautifully restored Boutique Maison in the old town, with a small-group class at Canto Cooking and a Douro wine tasting, so the holiday has a real anchor instead of being a sequence of restaurants. Canto Cooking is my on-site cooking school, run from the same building as the Maison, with a chef who teaches the dishes that actually live in a Porto kitchen. Couples, friend groups and slower family stays all book this version.

What the Cooking-School Stay Includes

  • One or two nights at the Maison in your suite of choice
  • A daily homemade breakfast each morning, included in the rate
  • Access to the heated outdoor pool, open every day from 09:30 to 19:30
  • A small-group cooking class at Canto Cooking (typically two to three hours)
  • A Douro wine tasting with our chef, with a tasting flight of Portuguese wines
  • The meal you cook, eaten together with the group around our communal table
  • Recipes to take home
Tell me your dates and I will confirm which class is running that week.

What You Cook at Canto Cooking

Classes change seasonally and our chef leads the menu. Typical classes include:
  • Bacalhau, in one of its many proper Portuguese forms
  • Arroz de marisco, the seafood rice of northern Portugal
  • A tasting of three petiscos (the Portuguese version of small plates)
  • A pastel de nata workshop (the proper way, with proper pastry)
  • Douro wine pairings, with our chef walking you through the regions
No prior cooking experience is needed. The point is to enjoy yourselves, learn a few real Portuguese things, and have a proper meal at the end.

A Maison, Not Just a Class

The reason the cooking-school stay works is that the class is part of the stay, not bolted onto it. After the class:
  • Walk back to your suite in the Maison without leaving the building
  • Take a slow swim in the heated pool
  • Breakfast the next morning in the Orangerie, made by the same kitchen team
  • Add a Douro day trip the day after to see where the wines come from
Most couples book two nights with the class and the tasting in between. Friend groups often add a longer Douro tour the next day.

Who the Cooking-School Stay Works For

  • Couples wanting a non-touristy anchor for a Porto weekend
  • Friend groups celebrating a milestone with an experience, not just a dinner
  • Slower family stays with older children (typically twelve and up for the cooking class)
  • Solo travellers wanting to meet a small group over a shared meal
  • Repeat Porto guests who have already done the headline sights

Right in the Heart of Porto, for the Days Around the Class

The Maison is on Rua do Almada in Porto’s old town, walkable to Livraria Lello, the Clérigos tower, São Bento station and the riverside in Ribeira. The Gaia gondola is one tram ride across the river for sunset at the port lodges. The Douro valley is a forty-minute drive for a tour the day after the class.
